End of an era

In 2006 Paul and Irene Williams joined the Great Yarmouth Branch of the Royal British Legion. Little did they know at the time that it would be a reversal in the fortunes of the branch and well as becoming an all consuming passion for them, until the present time. In 2007 Paul became the Branch Chairman and Irene became the Branch Secretary; Irene was later to take on the Treasurer's job as well.

When Dennis Capel joined the Branch and became Poppy Appeal Organiser the three of them set about raising the profile of the Great Yarmouth RBL. Paul and Irene attended many local and civic functions and became County Officers of the RBL. Dennis enthusiastically set about raising more money year on year for the Poppy Appeal.

Dennis has almost single handedly organised the Poppy Appeal fortnight in the borough ensuring the shops and businesses of the borough had a Poppy Box for your, always, generous donations. Dennis was also responsible for contacting the large Supermarkets in the borough to arrange a prescence in them during the Appeal fortnight and for organising an RBL shop in Great Yarmouth. Dennis was ably assisted by Paul and Irene who helped by "sorting" out Gorleston for him.

Praise must also go to all members of the branch and those hardy Street Collectors who stand on the cold, breezy street of Yarmouth and Gorleston in November, collecting money for the Poppy Appeal.

During this period the annual donations to the Poppy Appeal has trebled. Paul and Irene estimate they have raised in excess of £100,000 in Gorleston alone over the years.

Paul has always felt that the future of the RBL, lay in part, in the encoragement of young people to participate in various RBL activities. With this in mind he has affiliated six local youth organisations to the Great Yarmouth RBL.

As mentioned above Paul and Irene have attended many local and civic events to promote the RBL locally and this resulted in the branch being given the Freedom of the Borough in a ceremony at St Nicholas Church on November 2nd 2012. Other awards included a Certificate of Civic Support being awarded in 2016 by the then Mayor, Shirley Weymouth. In 2017 the branch received a Certificate of Merit from the County RBL.

Sad to say that Paul, Irene and Dennis will all be stepping down from their respective posts after this years Poppy Appeal fortnight. We wish them well for the future and send them all a hearty farewell and a big thank you for all the people they have helped, owing to their tireless efforts over the past thirteen years.
